Dimitri was the youngest player ever allowed to leave the Soviet Union when he signed with Washington as a 21-year-old during the 1990-91 season. A member of the gold-medal winning Soviet Team at the 1989 World Junior Championships, Dimitri idolized Soviet hockey legend Helmut Balderis (who played one NHL season at the end of his career) while he was growing up.
