Maple Leafs Sign Khristich to Contract


TORONTO (October 21, 1999) - The Toronto Maple Leafs announced this morning that the club has signed unrestricted free agent Dmitri Khristich to a multi-year contract.

Khristich, 30, is a veteran of nine National Hockey League seasons. Originally the Washington Capitals' sixth pick, 120th overall in the 1988 Entry Draft, Khristich spent five seasons with Washington, two with the Los Angeles Kings and two with the Boston Bruins leading up to this season. He is a six-time 20-goal scorer and he has exceeded the 30-goal mark on two occasions.

The forward collected 29 goals in each of the past two seasons with the Bruins and he ranked second on the team during both seasons in points. Boston advanced to the post-season in both 1997-98 and 1998-99 and Dmitri was a +36 with 26 powerplay goals and three shorthanded goals during his Bruins tenure.

In 1998-99 with Boston, Khristich led the team in goals and powerplay goals (13) while posting a +11 mark. His shooting percentage of 20.1 last season led all NHL shooters. He appeared in 12 playoff games last season and recorded seven points (3g, 4a).

In 627 career regular season NHL games, the native of Kiev, Ukraine has 225 goals and 282 assists for 507 points with 370 penalty minutes. He appeared in the NHL All-Star Game in 1997 and 1999.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
